Working Group: Provision of chemical kinetic data and mechanisms to the NERC community
Synopsis
One of the biggest research issues currently is understanding the coupled climate-chemistry earth system. NERC recently funded a knowledge transfer 'Good Ideas' project to support the creation of a common interactive tool for atmospheric chemistry/climate research through the integration of the IUPAC and MCM kinetic reaction databases/websites. Our objective is to provide a facility to enable the atmospheric scientists to both build and maintain chemical mechanisms for atmospheric chemistry modelling, an essential element in predictive modelling of chemistry/climate interactions and air quality. This will be achieved through the novel use of online kinetic databases coupled with new web-based tools. The development will provide an improved, essential link between the knowledge base deriving from laboratory measurements and the wider atmospheric science community.
Aims
The aim of this working group is to provide continuation and improve sustainability by allowing the group established by the KT project to engage with other users and sections of the NERC atmospheric community. For example other modelling groups in UK Universities making use of kinetic data, the mesoscale and air quality modelling groups would potentially all benefit from this work. The working group would also maintain contact with the laboratory kineticists by inviting key personnel to the group to ensure the database is keep up-to-date and serves this important section of the community. The working group will promote the use of this facility and gather feedback on its use and any requirements for modifications and carry out enhancements as the user-base increases.
Discussions
The members of the working group are actively making links within the community and discovering the extent to which XML is being used and the tools developed to use it. We welcome hearing from anyone who wishes to join the discussion.
