NIEeS reached the end of its contract in August 2008. This website remains as a historical document and as a gateway to the archive of presentations and supplementary material.
The over-riding goal of NIEeS is to facilitate the incorporation of eScience technologies into environmental research.
This goal had the following components:
- to raise the profile of eScience within the UK environmental science community
- to identify areas of environmental science which would benefit by an underpinning of eScience
- to identify and test new eScience technologies for environmental sciences, in each of the areas of grid computing, data representation and management, and collaborative grids
- to develop and utilise these tools in environmental sciences applications
- to provide training in eScience technologies and applications
- to provide opportunities for networking and interactions between different communities, including between science and IT communities
To enable it to work towards this mission, NIEeS had strong focus on the following activities:
- acting as a source of eScience information, including web-based information
- acting as a source of advice, help, and support on eScience technologies
- running workshops and small-scale networks designed to enable topic-based communities to explore the potential application of eScience
- running training activities designed to raise awareness of the potential of eScience and to develop the community skill base
- working with members of the environmental sciences community to develop demonstration and pilot projects
- running trials on emerging technologies
- developing relationships with UK and international eScience projects
