Storage Resource Broker
A two-day training workshop

13–14th January 2005

General information

The Storage Resource Broker (SRB) is a technology develop by San Diego Supercomputer Centre to enable data files held on distributed file systems to be accessed as if part of a single virtual file system (information can be obtained from the SDSC SRB site). What this means is that a grid application can deposit data on any one of the SRB data nodes, called “vaults”, and be seen by a user or an application on any other part of the grid system. The SRB is being used by at least two of the NERC projects, and is available as part of the UK National Grid Service.

The course is being co-organised by NIEeS and Peter Berrisford of the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory.

Aims of the course

The two-day course aims to present a look at the SRB from a number of perspectives, including:

  1. What the SRB does
  2. How the SRB works (general overview)
  3. How to install SRB client tools
  4. Issues in setting up and maintain a standalone instance of the SRB (including the MCAT server)
  5. How to use the SRB Scommands and the GUI interfaces (MySRB and InQ)
  6. How to use the SRB within a grid computing environment
  7. Case studies

Programme

The two-day course programme will begin with coffee on the first morning and end mid afternoon on the second day. The two-day course programme consistens of a mixture of taught sessions and hands-on activities. A full programme will follow soon. We are delighted that Tim Warnock from the SDSC will be taking part and giving some of the talks.

Location

The main meetings of the workshop, and lunches, will be held in Pavillion A of the Centre for Mathematical Sciences Cambridge (main entrance shown in photograph below).

Details of the location of the meeting, including travel plans, can be obtained here.

Overnight accommodation is being provided in Robinson College Cambridge. Directions are available here.

Accommodation, meals and registration for members of the UK academic/research community will be provided free of cost. The conference dinner on the evening of 13th January, to which all delegates are invited, will be held in Robinson College.

Follow-on

It is anticipated that the workshop may generate interest in some follow-on activities. We will discuss the sort of follow-on activities that can be arranged, such as visits to NIEeS to demonstrate some of the escience/grid technologies and to provide help with installation and usage.

Registration

There is no registration charge. Accommodation in Robinson College and meals (including the conference dinner) for UK academic participants will be provided with no charge. Registration is essential and must be done using our on-line form. The NIEeS will refund travel expenses

Please book early to ensure that you are able to obtain a place.

In the event of any difficulty in booking, including not receiving an email confirmation within 24 hours, please email the NIEeS office.
