A practical introduction to eScience:
one-day roadshow workshop

University of East Anglia, Tuesday 22 June 2004

General information

The UK environmental escience programme has been running for almost two years, and in that time there has been a lot of progress in developing grid computing solutions for a wide range of problems. We are now running a series of one-day practical roadshow events designed to show people how the new grid technologies work, and how they can be used for different classes of scientific problems.

Aim of the workshops

The aim of this one-day workshop is to introduce a number of key technologies in current use. The approach will be to run a series of live demonstrations of these technologies with appropriate background discussion and explanations of implementation and use, with time allocated for interactive question and answer sessions. Unlike other introductory workshops we have run, we will not be devoting time for descriptions of case studies per se. Instead our aim is for people to "see how to get their hands dirty", and case studies will be used to provide supporting illustrations of the value of the technology rather than as the central focus.

Target audience

The target audience is of people who do not yet have a grid computing environment in their home office/laboratory. It is anticipated that people will have some idea of running computing jobs, but will not have the training associated with computer managers.

Programme

The roadshow will begin with registration and coffee at 10 am, and end at 16:30.

The programme is as follows:

10.00–10.30 Registration and coffee
10.30–10.45 Introduction, Martin Dove
10.45–11.15 Background to the escience programme, Stuart Ballard
11.15–11.45 Authorization and authentication, Martin Keegan
11.45–12.45 Practical introduction to computing grids, Martin Dove
12.45–13.00 Time for discussion
13.00–13.45 Lunch
13.45–14.00 Live demonstration of running a fluid dynamics simulation over a computational grid, Stuart Ballard
14.00–14.30 Web services, Martin Keegan
14.30–15.15 Data grid tools, Martin Dove
15.15–15.30 Coffee/tea
15.30–16.30 Introduction to the Access Grid, Martin Dove & Martin Keegan
16.30 Close

Follow-on

It is anticipated that the workshop will generate some follow-on interest. We will discuss the sort of follow-on activities that could be arranged, such as practical training in installation and usage. We could, for example, have a small session whereby we help people to remotely install technologies on computers in people's home institutes. We could also have a follow-on user meeting where people share experience and problems, with the aim of providing some practical solutions.

Location

The workshop will take place in room 0.17 in the IT & Computating Service Building, University of East Anglia. Click here for a map of the local area, and click here to download a pdf map of the UEA campus (look for ITCS in the centre of the map).

For local information, please contact Andrew Boswell (UEA ITCS).

Registration

There is no registration charge, but we need to ask people to register in order to better plan for the event. This can be done using our on-line form. If you doubt that the registration has worked (you should receive confirmation by return email) please email the NIEeS office.

Please book early, because we need to have early estimates of numbers for catering planning.

Contact and further information

For information about registration, and all other types of queries, please contact the NIEeS office in the first instance.
