At a recent NIEeS event one of the speakers was talking about the use of the UK Access Grid for shared visualisation, and in the resultant discussion it was felt by everyone present that the wider community would appreciate a planned demonstration of the Access Grid. And so we have put together a programme of demonstrations, with great thanks for Lakshmi Santry and colleagues of the CLRC eScience Centre at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, and all the UK Access Grid sites who have made their facilities available for the demonstrations.
The Access Grid is the one of the key means to enable collaborative working through electronic communications. It is like video conferencing, but unlike standard video conferencing, the Access Grid enables groups in several different locations to communicate together (i.e. it is not a point-to-point system). The Access Grid uses a number of new grid technologies to enable it to be used as a reserach environment beyond a simple video conference. The UK has Access Grid nodes in all the eScience Centres, and is being used by many reseachers with escience projects.
Information about the concept of the Access Grid can be obtained from the Access Grid project web site. This web site also gives a range of documentation, the software, and a list of registered Access Grid nodes (you will find all the UK nodes involved in this demonstration listed there).
We will be staging demonstrations at 2 pm on May 14th, 22nd and 27th, although not all dates are available at each site (see below). The demonstrations have been organised by Laksmi Santry of the CLRC eScience Centre at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. The demonstrations will include specific demonstrations involving visualisation within one of the environmental escience testbed projects.

There is no registration charge, but we need to ask people to pre-register. Please book early, because we need to have early estimates of numbers for logistics planning. Because of limited capacity at each site, we will need to enforce a maximum participation at the most popular sites, which will be based on registration date. |
